Cigna Substance Use Center of Excellence Near Raleigh
At Cornerstone, our entire treatment philosophy is built on the medically and scientifically accepted premise that addicts and alcoholics aren't "bad" people who need to be good — they're sick people who need to get better, and that healing is exactly what we offer. We combine traditional drug and alcohol treatment methods like 12 Step facilitation with evidence-based psychological therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Schema Therapy and more to give those who come to us for help the best chance of long-term sobriety, free from the bonds of addiction and alcoholism. At Cornerstone, we're uniquely positioned to help those individuals, whether they come to us from Raleigh with a Cigna health policy or down the street with cash, because we were founded by a recovering alcoholic, and today, the majority of our staff members are drawn from the local recovery community.
While many of our staff members are licensed and credentialed therapists and counselors, so too are many of them individuals who once struggled to get clean and sober as well. What they found in recovery — some, right here at Cornerstone — is that a drug and alcohol rehab needs to offer so much more than just helping an individual quit drinking or using. The substances are just a symptom of the problem, and at Cornerstone, each patient who comes to us for help will spend 28 to 35 days addressing the roots of their problems. That journey begins with a safe, medically supervised tenure in our detox program, where they're slowly and safely with weaned from the substances that bring them to us. Afterward, they'll transition to one of our four residential inpatient programs — Newcomers, Recovery Renewal, Young Adult or Women's Only — and receive a full continuum of care, including services such as one-on-one counseling, peer support groups, educational lectures, Activity Therapy, Fitness Therapy in our state-of-the-art fitness center, psychiatric evaluations and dual diagnosis care for co-occurring mental health issues, family therapy sessions to help heal relationships back home and more.
We do it all from the comfort of our 25-acre, four-facility campus, located near downtown Knoxville, which is less than a 6-hour drive from Raleigh. For those who live in the Raleigh area, especially those with a Cigna plan that provides coverage for substance abuse treatment, there is no better option for hope, healing and recovery.

What Is Involved With The Alcoholism Treatment Programs?
At Cornerstone of Recovery, we believe passionately in the philosophy set forth by our founder: that addicts and alcoholics aren't "bad" people who need to be "good," they're sick people who need to get better, and they can do so with us. For years, individuals in need of drug and alcohol treatment have come to us from across the country, including the Raleigh area, and insurance companies like Cigna have continued to recognize our approach to treatment as unparalleled in the industry. The results we achieve come from what we call a "whole person" approach to drug and alcohol rehab — treating the body, mind, emotions and spirit, which are wrapped up in the continued use of drugs and alcohol, in spite of negative consequences. Simply quitting isn't enough; changes need to be made in order to stay quit, and we help those who come to us unravel and address the issues, traumas, poor coping skills and life circumstances that are tied up in their drug and alcohol use.
Newcomers Inpatient Program
The Newcomers Program is a 28- to 35-day course of treatment designed for those coming to drug and alcohol rehab for the first time. It includes a robust educational component, so those individuals get a better understanding of the disease concept and how it afflicts them, as well as basic recovery and therapeutic tools that can bring about profound changes in a short period of time. There's no better preparation for sobriety than the work that goes on within.
Recovery Renewal Inpatient Program
The Recovery Renewal Program is designed for individuals who have been through drug and alcohol rehab in the past, or who have managed to put together periods of abstinence, but have started drinking or using again. It's a deeper dive into the issues, traumas and triggers that led to their relapse, as well as more comprehensive treatment and therapy designed to help them get back on track, so that lifelong sobriety isn't just attainable, it's a reality.
Young Adult Inpatient Program
The Young Adult Program is built around the needs of men ages 18 to 26, who come to treatment after a short battle and a hard fall. They're often disappointed in themselves but concerned that treatment won't meet their needs — which is why in this program, they're grouped together with peers, receive more active and hands-on treatment and get an opportunity to work on some vocational opportunities that may help them discover what they want to do with their lives on the other side of addiction.
Women Only Inpatient Program
After years of co-educational treatment groups, the Women's Only Program was launched in 2017, after we moved to our new campus. By separating our treatment population by gender, we've given female patients an opportunity to unburden their spirits of pain, trauma and experiences that are often uncomfortable for them to discuss in the presence of their male counterparts. In so doing, we've created a sisterhood of support that's one of our most powerful programs.
No doubt, coming to Knoxville from Raleigh may seem like a drastic move — but such are called for in drastic times, and there are few times more drastic than when you're fighting for your life while in the grips of addiction or alcoholism. As a Cigna Substance Use Center of Excellence, we pride ourselves on providing Cigna policyholders with the best residential inpatient treatment they can get — as well as a strong Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that is an extension of their recovery safety net. For an additional eight weeks, those patients who aren't ready to return home to Raleigh can attend classes and groups for several hours a day while staying in our Sober Living community, where they'll be able to ease back into the "real" world. It's a way to make the transition easier, so that when they do go home to Raleigh, they do so as responsible, productive members of society.
