How Do I Know if there is a Problem?

1. Do the majority of your friends use drugs or alcohol?
2. Have your grades lowered because of your drug use or alcohol use?
3. Can you have fun without using drugs or alcohol?
4. Have you ever used alcohol or drugs to relieve boredom?
5. Does life seem empty or boring when you do not drink or use drugs?
6. Have you ever used alcohol or drugs to fit in or feel popular?
7. Have you ever stolen from anyone in order to use drugs or alcohol?
8. Have you ever lied to your parents about drug or alcohol use?
9. Have you ever lost a job because of drug or alcohol use?
10. Have you ever lost academic, athletic, or extracurricular opportunities because of drug or alcohol use?
11. Do you think everyone uses something in order to just get by in life?
12. Has your tolerance changed?  In other words, can you use or drink more or less than you used to?
13. Have your friends ever told you that you use or drink too much?
14. Have you been arguing with your parents more about either your drug/alcohol use or your behavior?

If you answered “Yes” to 3 questions or more, this is a strong indicator that you or your beloved adolescent may have a problem with drug or alcohol addiction.
